Selecting the right golf clubs for kids

To accurately measure for junior golf clubs, have them wear a pair of tennis shoes and measure from the floor to the top of their head. This is the standard on which most manufacturers base their sizing for kids golf clubs.

Choose golf clubs for kids based on height and ability. Poor fitting, heavy junior golf clubs can lead to swing problems that may be difficult to correct. Proper fitting clubs allow a child to swing freely and naturally.

3-5 years old, or under 3'8"

Golf clubs for this age should have a composite shaft as opposed to a heavy steel shaft. This makes kids golf clubs lighter and will provide more power for greater distance. Club heads should be much larger and lighter allow them to swing freely.

6-8 years old, or under 4'4"

When choosing junior golf clubs for this age group, start with the basics - 9 iron, driver and a putter. As they develop their swing add a few more clubs. They should include a 5 iron and a 7 iron. Kids golf club sets in this size range come complete with all the clubs, a bag (carry or stand bag) and some even include golf club headcovers.

9-11 years old, or under 5'

When choosing junior golf clubs for this age group, look for good quality construction. Golf clubs for kids at this age need to be strong enough to sustain a heavy hit. Partial sets are available but consider a full set for kids who are really keen.

11 and up, or over 5'

Some kids in this age group may still require junior golf clubs, although some may be ready for adult clubs. If they are just starting out, choose club sets with the basic clubs and add more as needed. Proper fitting junior golf equipment and good basis skills will lead to a lifetime enjoyment of golf.
